Frank DeAngelis met with us at Collaborative for Perpetual Innovation’s Maine Event: National Conference on Positive School Climate. In this chat, we were able to capture a mini series of intimate cuts that speak to the truth; how to continue on after surviving a high-level tragedy.
The Maine Juvenile Justice Advisory Group, also known as the Maine JJAG, goes digital.
January 11, 2014 Augusta, Maine (ME) – In an economy where every penny counts, there has never been a better time to encourage digital growth. The Maine Juvenile Justice Advisory Group is a federally madated state advisory group. It’s about 30 members strong with an historic judge from the Maine Court system on board; Maine’s JJAG is the only one in the nation with a judge on board.
Digital Communications: Maine JJAG
The Maine JJAG is pioneering a new way for other groups as they prepare to deliver reports and recommendations that are made available to the Maine State Legistlature, Senate, Governor, and Archives.
What would happen if each and every law maker in the state had an iPad (the most stable, intuitive, and sophisticated choice) to scan a legislative document with? Well it’s a hyper-local movement that saves energy, labor, print costs, delivery expenses, and many other costs that will be included in the fiscal note.
Let us say the JJAG makes an annual report of anywhere between 5-7 pages. Each document has an average cost that could easily be divided into 4. The 5 pages of 8.5 x 11 could be whittled down to a 4.25 x 5.5″ post card that looks like this:
All you need to do is install a scanner APP on your iPad and you are ready to scan a 15,000 page document (or more). The fonts are great and easy to read. Very little or no training needed. Law makers even benefit without needing to use paper to take notes. Just add a stylus or two with each iPad package and the Noteworty APP from the iTunes store and you have all you need to create and share documents in a secure and sophisticated group that is a pleasure to interact with.
The bottom line: Juvenile Justice in Maine
Save about 270,000 pages of print and 75% of the costs associated with annual legislative work. Just so we’re all on the same page, that’s a savings, in one legislative session, of over $135,000 dollars. Cost savings over the course of a 5 year period should be about $675,000. This five year period is important because the iPad will need to be replaced about every 5 years. The expected cost of purchasing iPads for Maine Lawmakers should be about $90,000 every 5 years.
Next step – paper free… Let’s save some of the Pine Tree State’s forested areas.
